At Restoration Dental Studio, we take your care seriously, and that means never guessing when it comes to your oral health. One of the most important tools we use for accurate diagnostics and high-quality care is dental x-rays. They are not just helpful, but clinically necessary.
Why Dental X-Rays Matter
Dental x-rays allow us to see what the eyes can’t:
- Decay / cavities
- Infections in the nerve
- Bone loss
- Impacted or missing teeth
Without x-rays, dental providers cannot make fully informed clinical decisions which compromises both your care and safety. That’s why the American Dental Association (ADA) considers x-rays to be a required part of comprehensive dental care.
Types of X-Rays and How Often You Need Them
There are several different types of x-rays that may be necessary.
- Bitewing x-rays: your standard annual x-rays, taken every 12 months to monitor the areas between your back teeth and under existing dental work – places we cannot assess with a visual exam alone.
- Panoramic: taken every 3-5 years to give a full view of your jaws and teeth. These are used to track changes over time such as shifting, and are especially important in planning for things like oral surgery and orthodontics.
- CBCT / Cone Beam (3D): advanced 3D imaging we use on an as-needed basis. These x-rays are crucial in diagnosing and planning for treatments like root canals or surgical procedures. They give us an in-depth look at infections or abnormalities.
Why are X-Rays Required?
We often hear, “can I just skip my x-rays this time?”
We understand the concern. But here’s the reality: without up-to-date x-rays, dentists cannot legally or ethically provide a complete diagnosis or treatment plan. We would not be able to:
- Detect decay between teeth
- Monitor bone health
- Identify infections early
- And we risk missing serious underlying issues or conditions
This is why new patients are required to have updated x-rays, and existing patients receive their annual x-rays unless it is clinically necessary to update them sooner.
What About Kids?
Children need x-rays too – sometimes even more frequently – because their mouths are constantly changing.
We use bitewings to monitor cavity risk as new teeth come in, and we take panoramic x-rays during key growth stages to assess jaw development, missing/extra teeth, and orthodontic needs.
Kids typically need their first dental x-rays between the ages of 4 and 6, but may need them earlier depending on when their teeth come in or in the case of a dental injury.
Radiation Concerns
Dental x-rays are extremely low in radiation, especially with the digital equipment we use. For comparison, a standard dental x-ray gives off less radiation than a short airplane flight or even a full day spent outside.
Bitewings and panoramic x-rays are among the lowest-dose imaging used in healthcare. Our 3D CBCT scans are used when clinically necessary, and even those deliver significantly less radiation than a typical medical CT scan. We have protective gear such as lead aprons readily available for patients who request it.
The Bottom Line
We don’t guess – we diagnose, and that requires imaging. Dental x-rays are used to maintain the standard-of-care and ensure that every patient is fully taken care of, every time.
