Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, affects the strength and stability of your teeth. This disease occurs when pockets of bacteria build up between your teeth and gums, causing inflammation, potential bone loss and gum recession. If left untreated, or improperly treated, periodontal disease can put you at greater risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, respiratory disease, inflammatory driven dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and loss of teeth. While there are many traditional treatments that are more invasive, including surgery, here at Restoration Dental Studio we choose PerioProtect to help combat periodontal disease for those who qualify.
How it works?
First thing would be calling Restoration Dental Studio to schedule your comprehensive exam to determine if you are a candidate for the PerioProtect® treatment. PerioProtect® is not meant to be a preventative measure to stop gum disease, the true preventative care is brushing, flossing, and the use of mouthwash. However, once you have been diagnosed with gum disease- either gingivitis (a mild form of gum disease which is treatable & reversible) or periodontitis (more progressive and difficult to treat) then a treatment plan can be put together. For some patients, the non-invasive PerioProtect® Trays reduce the need for surgical intervention. For others, PerioProtect® can be a compliment to traditional root scaling, root planing, and even gum flap surgery. It helps ensure the bacteria can’t return and get a new foothold.
After that is determined and the proper steps have been taken prior to treatment, an intraoral scan of your mouth is performed in the office and sent to the PerioProtect® lab to fabricate your customized trays. This is done to ensure the PerioProtect® Trays have a tight seal to place and hold medication deep below the gum line, where the infection lies. Once your PerioProtect® Trays come back from the lab, Dr. Emily and our hygienist will decide on the frequency you will wear them based on your level of gum disease.
The PerioProtect® Method
Bacteria thrive deep below the gum line in the periodontal pocket.
Brushing, rinsing and flossing cannot reach the bacteria.
The Perio Tray™ delivers medicine deep into perio pockets and holds it there.
