College-Bound? Don’t Forget Your Smile!

As students pack up their dorm supplies and prepare for the next chapter, one important thing often gets overlooked: their dental health. Whether they’re heading off for their first semester or returning to campus life, college students face new routines, stressors, and late-night snacking habits that can all take a toll on their teeth.

Here are a few ways to protect their smiles before the school year begins:

Schedule a Cleaning & Exam

College schedules are busy and unpredictable. Taking care of cleanings, x-rays, and checkups before heading out gives students one less thing to worry about later. It also gives us a chance to catch any small issues – like early cavities and wisdom tooth concerns – before they become bigger problems.

Plus, trying to squeeze those routine 6 months visits in during short holiday breaks can be a hassle for students and families!

Address any Diagnosed Dental Work

If there’s a filling, crown, or nightguard that’s been on the “to-do” list, now is the time. Dental issues don’t take a break just because school is in session! Completing any necessary dental treatment now prevents unexpected dental emergencies during midterms or finals.

Review Oral Hygiene Basics

We know college life isn’t always ideal for routines, especially with roommates. A quick refresh on brushing twice a day for two minutes, flossing regularly, and avoiding sugary drinks can go a long way. If your student has a retainer or clear aligners, encourage them to keep a travel case and cleaning supplies on hand.

Consider a Custom Sports Mouthguard

For students playing college-level sports, a professionally made mouthguard offers superior protection compared to store-bought options. It can also help prevent serious injuries to teeth and gums.

Know Where to Go, and Know Your Benefits

If they’re attending school far from home, help them research a local dentist for emergencies. Don’t worry – we’re still here to help when they get back, and we are happy to help coordinate transferring records!

In addition, make sure your student has a copy of their dental insurance card and knows their benefits. They should know who the policyholder is, the member ID number, and any other information that might be needed to submit claims.

Stock Up on Smile Essentials

Send them off with a dental care kit! A little preparation now helps them stay consistent later. They should have an electric toothbrush, a few tubes of toothpaste, and floss. Here are our recommendations:

Oral-B IO Series 5 Electric Toothbrush – comes with a travel case and replacement toothbrush head.

Crest Pro-Health Gum Detoxify Toothpaste – affordable over-the-counter fluoride toothpaste.

Cocofloss – textured, pro-grade flavored floss.

Cordless Waterpik – great for on-the-go students.

Mouthology Tongue Scraper – comes in a two-pack.
